You’ve booked the venue, sent the invitations and finalized the menu. The last decision? Which one of these cannabis-friendly honeymoon destinations to head to when it’s all over.
Perhaps you’re a medical cannabis patient hoping your honeymoon destination will look kindly upon your medicinal needs; maybe you prefer to consume cannabis instead of alcohol; or maybe you just want the option to try cannabis on your vacation without worrying about any legal consequences.
As cannabis legalization, decriminalization and medical programs continue to spread throughout the country and around the world, there are more cannabis-friendly honeymoon destinations to visit than ever before. We’ve compiled a list of some of the most beautiful and romantic spots, each unique in their own ways. But the one thing all of these cannabis-friendly honeymoon destinations have in common is their progressive attitude towards cannabis. These places will give you the freedom to enjoy cannabis as you see fit, while also providing an incredible backdrop for memorable experiences that go way beyond cannabis culture (gorgeous spas, glacier hikes and more!).
Sonoma County, California
A short 45 minutes from San Francisco sits one of the country’s most popular honeymoon destinations: Sonoma County. And it’s no wonder, considering the county is home to 425 wineries, a seemingly endless landscape of gorgeous vineyards, postcard-worthy, cliff-lined beaches, otherworldly redwood forests and a laundry list of five-star restaurants. Book a room at one of the world-class Sonoma County resorts, and spend your honeymoon exploring all that wine country has to offer.
Adult-use cannabis is legal in California, so you don’t have to be a resident of the state to enjoy cannabis. There are recreational cannabis dispensaries throughout the county that adults over 21 can visit with a valid ID. And lucky for you, Sonoma County is near some of the most celebrated cannabis farms in the country, so many of the products you can buy at the dispensaries are locally grown and processed.
Aspen, Colorado
Believe it or not, this dreamy mountain town really shines year-round. There’s something for everyone here (and it’s not just about skiing!). Whether you want to spend the day relaxing in a resort spa, shopping in the town’s quaint downtown area, hiking up Buttermilk Mountain for stunning views or zooming down the Rocky Mountains on a mountain bike, Aspen is a cannabis-friendly destination.
Just like Sonoma County, Aspen is home to some of the most luxurious resorts in the country. It’s a regular vacation spot for those with money to burn, so there’s no shortage of pampering and fine cuisine options. But if you prefer something a bit more rustic, there are tons of private cabin rentals to choose from, too.
Cannabis is legal in Colorado for any adult 21 years or older. Dispensaries are plentiful and brimming with interesting cannabis products to try.
Glacier Bay, Alaska
If you’re looking to see natural beauty on your honeymoon, consider Alaska. Take a boat tour through the truly remarkable Glacier Bay, or head into Denali Park, home to some of the country’s most striking mountain views. Of course, getting the opportunity to see the Northern lights, a stunning show of magnetic energy and light, is what makes Alaska truly special.
There aren’t as many five-star resorts or fully equipped spas in Alaska (compared to other honeymoon destinations). But there are few places in the world with more raw beauty than Alaska. You can book a room in the iconic Glacier Bay Lodge, or if you’re looking for a major splurge, you can book a stay at the incredible Sheldon Chalet in Denali Park.
Alaska legalized cannabis in 2014. Adults over 21 years old can have up to one ounce of marijuana in their possession and can purchase cannabis from state-licensed dispensaries.
Punta Del Este, Uruguay
Punta del Este is the second-largest city in Uruguay and one of the most significant resort towns in all of South America. A gorgeous coastal town packed with five-star resorts and brimming with culture, Punta del Este is one of the more traditional honeymoon destinations on this list. You can lounge on Jose Ignacio Beach, book a guided horseback excursion for a romantic ride on the sand, party in La Barra—a popular town only a few miles away—and eat your way through the city’s eclectic cuisine.
Uruguay was the first country in the world to fully legalize cannabis. Now, it’s home to a plethora of state-sanctioned cannabis pharmacies and clubs. While these are reserved for Uruguay residents only, locals are known for being incredibly generous with their cannabis, and gifting marijuana is completely legal. Anyone over the age of 18 can smoke anywhere except in public buildings or enclosed spaces. That means you can light up at any outdoor café, beach or sidewalk.
Amsterdam, Netherlands
No cannabis-friendly honeymoon list would be complete without Amsterdam. Long held as a cannabis mecca, Amsterdam has been at the forefront of canna-tourism for decades. Adults can head into any of the city’s many coffee shops where they can purchase cannabis flower and pre-rolls, a caffeinated beverage and enjoy both right inside the café. At many shops, you can even rent a bowl or a bong.
Amsterdam is also one of the most romantic cities in the world. The city’s wide canals flow throughout, lined by streets of unique row homes. Take a sunset boat tour, wander the halls of the Van Gogh museum or stroll through one of the many historic parks within the city. If you want to extend your honeymoon, you can jump on a train and head in any direction to continue your European adventure.
As the world opens up more and more to legal cannabis, it makes travel much easier for medical marijuana patients. Here’s to a happy honeymoon full of culture, good food, incredible sites—and a little cannabis, too.
