Healthy eating and living well—these are the principles behind MoonMan’s Mistress, created by paleo chef Liz Rudner and bootcamp instructor Jamel Ramiro. Liz was inspired to create the healthy, healing marijuana edibles for people with dietary restrictions following her own diagnosis of Celiac disease and Hashimoto’s disease.
Certain medical marijuana users avoid edibles because they’re usually full of sugars and artificial additives, which are off limits to those who need to avoid inflammatory ingredients. But the MoonMan’s Mistress range includes cannabis edibles that are paleo, gluten-free, soy-free, dairy-free and low glycemic—not to mention delicious and effective. For Liz and Jamel, food is medicine.
An autoimmune disease develops when the immune system malfunctions and attacks parts of the body, mistaking them for dangerous foreign invaders. According to the National Institutes of Health, more than 23.5 million Americans suffer from one of over 80 autoimmune diseases, including:
As research evolves, neuroscientists are discovering that gut bacteria plays a large role in autoimmune disease cause and prevention. This means folks with an autoimmune disease need to be very careful with their diet by moderating sugar, gluten and other potentially inflammatory ingredients.
Many autoimmune diseases sufferers are discovering the effectiveness of cannabis for pain and stress relief as well as its anti-inflammatory properties. This is where the option for a healthy, nutrient-rich edible makes all the difference. As someone who experienced the powerful healing effects that cannabis and a change in diet can have, Liz brings an empathetic perspective and proven methods to MoonMan’s Mistress.
Because Parkinson’s disease patients become nutrient deficient, they can benefit from MoonMan’s Mistress cookies and cakes in multiple ways. According to Liz, the Cosmic Cacao Peppermint Cookie is popular with Parkinson’s patients because it has a large concentration of magnesium, something they’re often deficient in. Magnesium is an important mineral that has many important jobs, including helping the nervous system function, and keeping bones and the heart healthy.
These cookies also help Parkinson’s disease patients regulate their sugar intake. Folks suffering from Parkinson’s disease often crave sugar, and the cookies—which contain only natural, mineral-based sugars—satisfy that craving without spiking blood sugar.
Besides making their nourishing edibles available to medical marijuana patients, Liz and Jamel connect with the Parkinson’s community—doctors and patients—outside the kitchen to spread their knowledge of nutritious food and energizing movement. They realize the importance of a holistic approach to health saying, “If you eat well, you move well. If you move well, you live well.”
As more patients and doctors are exposed to the health benefits of these paleo edibles, Liz and Jamel are slowly building trust in the traditionally conservative Parkinson’s disease community.
Jamel’s outreach into the Parkinson’s community began when he took notice of a group of seniors training at his gym. He shared moves with their trainer and introduced them to MoonMan’s Mistress. Jamel now works with small groups of Parkinson’s patients, helping them move well and get their muscles pliable. The combination of movement and cannabis helps ease motor and non-motor symptoms increasing coordination, mental sharpness and even helping with sexual dysfunction.
Liz also makes personal connections with Parkinson’s disease sufferers, including a friend’s uncle who was struggling to find alternatives to the muscle relaxers and painkillers he was prescribed. Moving to a paleo diet that includes MoonMan’s Mistress cookies, he has been off painkillers for three months.
Another Parkinson’s patient named Kevin found that regular consumption of Moonman’s Mistress CBD cookie has helped ease his insomnia, pain and inflammation, and improve his quality of life. He’s been spreading the word about his success with cannabis use as part of a healthy and active program—Kevin also trains with Jamel—to fellow Parkinson’s patients.
Moving forward, Jamel will continue his private movement classes with small groups of Parkinson’s patients while Liz provides feedback to neurologists who want to learn more about the use of cannabis and nutrient-dense foods to help treat autoimmune diseases.
If you suffer from an autoimmune disease, choose an edible that’s low in sugar and high in anti-inflammatory ingredients—you can’t go wrong with any of the MoonMan’s Mistress cookies. Besides the Cosmic Cacao Peppermint, check out the Trail Mix Super Nova Cookie or the Lemon Maca Shortbread Cookie. Both are loaded with healthy ingredients like flax meal, hemp seeds and ginger. And as with all new marijuana products, try them on a day you don’t have any responsibilities and go low and slow, taking one small piece at a time and waiting a couple of hours to see how it affects you.
